Top 5 Mnemonics for Critical NCLEX Pharmacology Questions

Published: May 5, 2026 • 4 Min Read

Pharmacology is frequently cited as the hardest part of any NCLEX review. Memorizing hundreds of drug names is impossible. Instead, smart nursing students study drug classes, suffixes, and side effects using mnemonics.

1. Beta Blockers (The "-olol"s)

Mnemonic: 4 B’s of Beta Blockers.
Bradycardia, Blood pressure drops, Bronchospasm (do not give to asthma patients!), Blood sugar masking (hides hypoglycemia signs).

2. ACE Inhibitors (The "-pril"s)

Mnemonic: A.C.E.
Angioedema (life-threatening airway swelling), Cough (dry, hacking), Elevated Potassium (hyperkalemia).

3. Emergency Asthma Drugs

Mnemonic: A.S.T.H.M.A.
Albuterol (First line), Steroids, Theophylline, Hydration, Mask (Oxygen), Anticholinergics (Ipratropium).

Focus on Priority Actions

The NCLEX doesn't care if you know the chemical makeup of a drug. It cares if you know the nursing priority. When doing practice NCLEX questions, always ask yourself: "What will kill my patient first if I give this medication?" Focus your flashcards and study time on contraindications and high-alert toxicity thresholds.
