Mastering the Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN): Case Studies & Partial Credit

Published: May 10, 2026 • 5 Min Read

For students asking "What is the NCLEX NGN?", the answer lies in clinical judgment. The Next-Generation NCLEX moved away from rote memorization to test how safely a nurse can make decisions in a real-world environment.

Unfolding Case Studies

Every test-taker will see a minimum of 3 unfolding case studies. Each case study contains 6 questions that map to the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (NCSBN-CJMM): Recognize Cues, Analyze Cues, Prioritize Hypotheses, Generate Solutions, Take Action, and Evaluate Outcomes. Read the medical record tabs carefully, as information will update as you progress.

The Benefit of Partial Credit

One of the biggest advantages of the NGN is partial credit. On older NCLEX exams, a "Select All That Apply" (SATA) question was all-or-nothing. Now, the NGN uses a +/- scoring system. You gain points for correct selections and lose points for incorrect selections, but the total score cannot go below zero.

Matrix Questions and Bowties

Expect to see new item types like matrix grids (where you check multiple boxes across rows and columns) and Bowtie questions (where you drag and drop conditions, actions, and parameters to monitor). Practicing these specific formats in the Tussna app is crucial to building familiarity before your NCLEX exam.
