How Many Questions Are on the NCLEX RN? Everything You Need to Know

Published: May 20, 2026 • 5 Min Read

One of the most frequently asked questions by nursing students is: "How many questions is the NCLEX?" Unlike standard nursing school exams, the NCLEX doesn't have a fixed number of questions. Instead, it relies on a sophisticated algorithm.

The Short Answer: 85 to 150 Questions

For the Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN), you will answer a minimum of 85 questions and a maximum of 150 questions. Out of the first 85 questions, 15 are unscored "pre-test" questions used by the NCSBN to evaluate future exam items.

Understanding Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT)

The NCLEX RN uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). This means the exam adapts to your ability level in real-time. Every time you answer a question, the computer re-estimates your ability.

  • If you answer correctly: The next question will be slightly harder.
  • If you answer incorrectly: The next question will be slightly easier.

The computer continues this process until it is 95% certain that your ability is either clearly above or clearly below the passing standard.

What If I Go Beyond 85 Questions?

If you reach question 86, take a deep breath. It does not mean you are failing. It simply means the computer hasn't reached that 95% confidence threshold yet. Many excellent nurses pass the exam at 150 questions. Keep focusing on one question at a time and apply your clinical judgment.

How to Prepare

Because you don't know how many questions you'll get, you must build mental stamina. Use the Tussna NCLEX Prep App to simulate 150-question practice tests so you are physically and mentally prepared for the long haul.
