NCLEX Shut Off at 85 Questions: What It Actually Means
It is the most nerve-wracking moment in a nursing student's life: you click "Next" on question 85, and the screen goes blank. The NCLEX shut off at 85 questions. Did you pass? Did you fail?
The 95% Confidence Rule
Because the NCLEX uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT), the exam stops the absolute moment it is 95% confident in your ability. If it stops at 85 questions (the minimum number possible), it means one of two things happened:
- You passed decisively: Your performance was consistently high above the passing standard line. The computer didn't need any more data to know you are a safe nurse.
- You failed decisively: Your performance was consistently below the passing standard. The computer calculated that even if you answered the remaining questions right, you couldn't pull your score up enough to pass.
Statistics Are in Your Favor
Statistically speaking, the vast majority of test-takers whose exam shuts off at the minimum number of questions passed. First-time test-takers generally have a high pass rate, and shutting off at 85 usually indicates strong competency.
